First Miss Marple
by: Mary

Hello Vera

Although Margaret Rutherford can claim to be the first big screen Miss Marple ('Murder She Said 1961') the famous Gracie Fields actually played her in a US TV production of 'A Murder is Announced' in 1956 (seems a little bizarre this, as Gracie was born and bred in a Lancashire mill town, a million miles away from St Mary Mead!!)

Anyway, don't spend that 50p all at once.

Mary

First Miss Marple
by: debbie

Hello there,

I am not sure but I think you are right, the first Miss Marple on film was played by Margaret Rutherford. Other actresses have played her on stage and on radio. I just want to add my own comments: a lot of people think that Miss Rutherford was not suited for the role of Miss Marple according to Mrs. Chrsitie's description. But regardless, she is Miss Marple.
